Build a Time Capsule and Bury It — or Seal It

What it's about

Gather a small group — family, close friends, or just two of you — and fill a weatherproof container with things that capture right now: a handwritten note about what you're hoping for, a photo printed that day, a receipt from a favorite spot, a headline, something small and personal. Seal it with a date and a plan to open it. The ritual of closing it is genuinely moving, and the future opening is something everyone actually looks forward to.

It works for any milestone because it's inherently forward-looking — you're not just celebrating what happened, you're making a commitment to the future. What to expect

The whole thing takes about two hours including gathering materials and writing notes. Budget for a quality waterproof container if you're actually burying it — cheap ones fail. If burial isn't an option, a sealed box in a closet works just as well. The harder part is actually finding it again, so document where it is.

How to set it up

   Choose a container: a waterproof PVC capsule ($20-40 online) for burying, or a nice metal tin or wooden box for indoor storage.

   Set a firm opening date — 5, 10, or 25 years — and write it on the outside of the container along with the sealing date.

   Ask each participant to bring 2-3 items: a handwritten note, a printed photo, and one small object that means something right now.
